For those who can't tell the difference between fourth-ranked Oakton's freshmen twin guards, Caroline Coyer wears her short ponytail cocked to the left, while her sister Katherine sports a slightly longer braid cocked to the right.
If that's still not enough, then their opposite styles of play should help differentiate between the two. Last night, they merged their styles, combining for 14 points in a 36-34 victory over Westfield in the Virginia AAA Concorde District tournament championship at Robinson High School.
"They both have a lot of savvy and they understand spacing, when to attack and are good passers," Oakton Coach Fred Priester said. "Caroline is a bit slicker, but Katherine shows up every day with her lunch pail, ready to work."
In order to close out a tight fourth quarter, Oakton (24-0) relied on Caroline's finesse and ballhandling to avoid traps from a feisty Westfield press while Katherine (10 points) went 3 for 4 from the free throw line to give the Cougars their fifth straight district championship.
The victory gave Oakton a top seed and a home game against Stuart (7-15) in Monday's first round of the Virginia AAA Northern Region tournament. Westfield (17-8) will face Yorktown (14-9) at home.
"My style, I'd say, is smart," said Caroline, a 5-foot-8 starter who scored four points. "Hers? I want to say is relentless."
The twins combined for seven of Oakton's nine fourth-quarter points and they rotated guarding Shelby Romine in a box-and-one defense in the second half. It cooled off Westfield's junior guard, who scored eight of her team-high 13 points in the first half.
"We know what each other does," said Katherine, the Cougars' 5-9 sixth man who has played alongside of her sister since they were 8 years old on the Potomac Valley Vogues, an AAU travel team. "We can anticipate where the other one is going to be."
Oakton has won 11 of the past 15 district tournament titles and has barreled through a dominant five-year stretch in which it has gone 68-2 against league challengers. The Cougars are 124-11 overall in the past five seasons.
No. 4 Oakton 36, Westfield 34
Girls' Final: Oakton beat Westfield for the third time this season.
Boys' Final: Junior forward Adam Fridy scored a game-high 19 points and earned the tournament's most valuable player honors in No. 12 Chantilly's 67-46 win over Westfield. The Chargers (22-1) clinched the top seed in the Northern Region tournament, where they'll face Yorktown (13-11).
