A 52-year-old Montgomery County woman was shot to death outside her church yesterday morning, and off-duty police officers who were working there took her husband into custody, Montgomery police said.
They said Patricia Ann Simmons Kelly of Rockville was fatally shot about 11:30 a.m. in the parking lot of People's Community Baptist Church in Silver Spring.
Services, scheduled for 11 a.m., were apparently in progress.
The officers heard shots and quickly found a man with a handgun, police said.
They said the woman's husband, Kevin Kelly, 52, who was listed at the same College Parkway address as his wife, was taken into custody. Police said last night that no charges had been filed yet.
A neighbor of the couple's described the Kellys as "very friendly." The neighbor, who did not wish to be quoted by name, called Patricia Kelly a "good, hardworking," dependable woman who worked at a law firm and went to church "every Sunday."
Police said the husband had recently been asked to leave the family home and went to the church to meet with her. They said the shooting occurred in the lot near the front entrance. Church officials could not be reached immediately to comment.
