Landon guard Christian Webster will play for Harvard, according to his father, Darryl, and Bears Coach Andy Luther.

Webster, a 6-foot-5 guard who averaged 23.3 points per game, has been a hot target for the Crimson. According to Luther and Darryl Webster, the player could not orally commit until his test scores met the Ivy League school's academic criteria.

"He went online [Sunday] night to check his ACT scores and he scored high enough," Darryl said in a text message. Luther said that Webster is awaiting an official letter of acceptance from Harvard.

According to Luther, Webster had recruiting interest from the Patriot League, Atlantic 10 and the Colonial Athletic Association as well as several Ivy League schools.

"He has several people in his life who he knows very well and is very close with that have Harvard ties," Luther said.

Handley's Wilson Commits to Maryland

Handley junior Jeremiah Wilson orally committed this weekend to play football for Maryland, where he is expected to play defensive back.

Wilson, whose recruitment had begun to heat up since the end of the season, chose the Terrapins early because he grew up outside Baltimore as a fan of the program, Handley Coach Tony Rayburn said.

"I really don't think it mattered who had come in and offered him," Rayburn said. "He wants to go to Maryland."

Wilson was an all-Virginia AA Region II selection at running back after leading Handley to the region championship game. He was also a second-team all-region pick at defensive back. . . .

Northwest has named Mark Maradei its new football coach. Maradei was Rockville's coach the past three years, going 17-13, including the school's second playoff appearance, and first in 10 years. Prior to Maradei's arrival, Rockville had not won more than three games in a season since 2000.

"It's hard to walk away from those boys after all that we've done," Maradei said, "but this is a great opportunity, and it's obviously a bigger school."

Maradei replaces Andrew Fields, who stepped down last month to accept an assistant principal position at Damascus.
