George Washington is cutting its men's and women's diving teams effective immediately, in part due to belt-tightening during the economic downtown.
Athletic director Jack Kvancz said Tuesday the teams are being discontinued in order to allow the school to focus more resources on the men's and women's swimming programs.
"Clearly the downturn played a role, but this is something we've been discussing for a while," Kvancz said. "Maybe that was enough to shove us over the fence."
The university said it will assist any diving team member who wishes to transfer to another school. Those staying at GW will have their scholarships honored through graduation.
The cutbacks leave GW with 22 varsity programs, including 10 men's sports and 12 women's sports.
