Chiefs Acquire Cassel and Vrabel From Pats for Second-Round Pick
The Patriots traded QB Matt Cassel, who thrived as their starter this past season filling in for the injured Tom Brady, to the Chiefs.
New England sent Cassel and veteran LB Mike Vrabel to Kansas City for the Chiefs' second-round selection, 34th overall, in the NFL draft in April, the teams announced.
The trade is contingent upon Cassel and Vrabel passing physicals, according to the Chiefs.
"I have a long history with both players," Chiefs GM Scott Pioli said in a written statement released by the club. "Mike and Matt are men that I respect both personally and professionally. I look forward to having them as new members of the Chiefs family."
Cassel presumably will take over as the starter in Kansas City.
The move seemingly signals the Patriots are comfortable that Brady will be healthy next season after missing almost all of this past season because of a knee injury suffered in the opening game.
Before Cassel was traded to the Chiefs, the Broncos considered a three-team deal in which they would have sent their quarterback, Jay Cutler, to the Buccaneers and Cassel would have ended up in Denver, according to reports. There reportedly was a similar scenario involving the Lions.
-- BRONCOS: Denver completed the signing of S Brian Dawkins, who leaves the Eagles after 13 seasons and seven Pro Bowl selections.
Dawkins agreed to a five-year, $17 million deal with the Broncos that includes $7.2 million guaranteed, according to the NFL Network.
The Broncos also reportedly agreed to free agent deals yesterday with DT Darrell Reid, formerly of the Colts, and LB Andra Davis, formerly of the Browns.
