A 14-year-old boy was fatally shot late Saturday in Northeast Washington, D.C. police said.

Police identified the youth as Arthur Davis and said he lived in Northeast Washington. No street address was given.

He was shot about 10:50 p.m. in the 4100 block of Minnesota Avenue, police said. A man who lives in the area said he heard "loud talking," followed by a gunshot.

Then, the man said, came the words, "What did you do that for?"

The next thing he heard, he said, was the sound of running footsteps.

A leader of the Victory Outreach church said the slain youth had been a member of the church for about two years.

Carl Demus said the youth played the bongo drums at church services.

"He seldom missed a Sunday," Demus said.

At the church, Demus said, the youth was part of what is known as the Youth Gang. He said "gang" stands for God's Anointed Now Generation.

Demus said he understood that the slain youth might have been out Saturday night with other young people from the church.
