Renee Montgomery scored 23 points and top-ranked Connecticut beat host Rutgers, 69-59, last night to finish off the fifth undefeated regular season in program history.
The Huskies (30-0, 16-0 Big East) last went unbeaten in the regular season in 2002-03. Connecticut finished that year with its second straight national championship after losing to Villanova in the Big East tournament. Last night's win also marked the seventh time Connecticut has run through the conference unbeaten.
Tina Charles added 14 points for the Huskies, who will next play in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament Sunday. Rutgers (18-11, 9-7) will be the seventh seed and play Saturday in the second round of the tournament.
Kia Vaughn scored a season-high 24 points and Epiphanny Prince added 11 to lead the Scarlet Knights, who had won four straight by an average of 16 points before yesterday's loss.
Connecticut became the first team since Duke in 2006-07 to finish the regular season unblemished.
-- PITTSBURGH 79, ST. JOHN'S 60: Shavonte Zellous scored 18 points in her final home game and the No. 14 Panthers rebounded from a loss by defeating the Red Storm.
Pittsburgh (22-6, 12-4 Big East) opened up a 13-point lead at halftime and had few problems in tying the school record for regular-season victories. The Panthers were coming off a 75-51 loss to No. 7 Louisville on Saturday.
Sky Lindsay scored 16 points and Kelly McManmon had 12 for St. John's (16-13, 4-12), which dropped its fifth in six games.
-- SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 71, ORAL ROBERTS 64: Jill Young came off the bench to score a game-high 23 points, including a tiebreaking three-pointer with 5:12 left, to lift the No. 17 Jackrabbits past the Golden Eagles.
South Dakota State (28-2, 17-1) clinched its second consecutive Summit League title and extended its winning streak to 14 games.
