IRAQ

U.S. Soldier Killed In Attack on Mosul Base

Insurgents attacked a main U.S.-Iraqi base Tuesday in the northern city of Mosul, killing one American soldier and striking directly at the Iraqi command center for an anti-insurgent offensive.

The barrage underscored the resilience of al-Qaeda in Iraq and other groups after repeated attempts to break their hold in Mosul, where at least seven U.S. soldiers have been killed since early February.

The attack Tuesday hit Forward Operating Base Diamondback in southern Mosul, according to the U.S. military, which said initial reports indicated it was a rocket attack. Iraqi police, however, described it as mortar strikes.

IRAN

U.S. Reporter in Prison, Officials Acknowledge

Iran's judiciary spokesman said Tuesday that a U.S. journalist detained about a month ago is being held in Tehran's Evin prison in line with a court order but gave no other details.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman said Monday that Roxana Saberi, 31, was engaged in "illegal" activities because she kept working in Iran after the government revoked her press credentials in 2006.

Saberi's father, Reza, has said his daughter told him in a Feb. 10 phone call that she was detained after buying a bottle of wine. He said he has not heard from her since.

CANADA

Bus Attack Trial Opens

A man accused of beheading and cannibalizing a fellow passenger on a Greyhound bus in Canada last summer apologized to police when he was arrested and begged officers to kill him. The details emerged Tuesday as Vince Li pleaded not guilty at the start of his murder trial in Winnipeg.

Attorneys for the Chinese immigrant do not dispute that he killed 22-year-old carnival worker Tim McLean, but they will argue he is mentally ill.

Zimbabwe Lawmaker to Be Freed

A Zimbabwean judge ordered the release of a senior lawmaker, who was part of the opposition until a unity government was formed last month, after nearly three weeks in prison on weapons charges. High Court judge Tedias Karwi ruled there was "no merit" in the state's application for Movement for Democratic Change lawmaker Roy Bennett to be denied bail.
