A Landover area resident and an elderly man who lived in her house were killed early yesterday in a fire that started in the basement, Prince George's County fire officials said.

The victims were identified as Eva L. Kinsey, 65, and Walter W. Crawley, 78, who was described as either a friend or a border in the home. Investigators think they were overcome by intense heat and thick smoke as they attempted to flee from the house.

Crawley was found in the basement, near the steps, and Kinsey was found on the main floor of the house, in the 7200 block of Flagstaff Street, said Mark Brady, a fire department spokesman.

Brady said the fire was reported shortly before 3 a.m. by a neighbor who saw smoke coming from the house. Firefighters extinguished the blaze within 10 minutes, Brady said, but found the man dead and the woman in extremely critical condition. She was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.

Brady said that the cause of the fire is under investigation but that there is no indication that it was suspicious.

The home was equipped with a smoke detector, Brady said, and fire crews will determine whether the alarm went off.
