Chat Plus: What to Do, Where to Stay in Wilmington, Del.

Sunday, March 8, 2009

During our online chat (most Mondays at 2 p.m.), you ask and we answer your travel questions -- mostly. Here's one we couldn't get to last week.

I want to get out of the city for a night or two, and I was considering Wilmington, Del. (It looked nice outside the window when I went to Philly last fall.) What could I see there? Any recommendations on places to stay?

Wilmington is nice. Joe Biden's home town has far too much to see and do in one weekend, but start with the Hagley Museum, the site of the gunpowder works founded by E.I. du Pont in 1802. Nemours Mansion & Gardens is a real treasure, and the Rockwood Museum, a restored 1850s mansion, is another don't-miss. Museum overload? Check out the Christina Riverfront, with shops, water taxis and, oops, more museums. Stay at the Hotel du Pont, the fanciest place in town and well worth the splurge.
