Georgetown's shooters hit everything from posts to goalie John Galloway's right foot in an 8-5 lacrosse loss to Syracuse yesterday at Multi-Sport Field. A crowd of 2,942 that included Washington Redskins Coach Jim Zorn watched 11th-ranked Georgetown (1-2) stay even until the final minute of the third quarter.

Georgetown Coach Dave Urick was pleased with improved play on faceoffs (12 of 17), defense and shot selection after last weekend's loss at unranked St. John's, which followed a win at then-No. 3 Maryland. But the Hoyas were unable to solve Galloway, who helped Syracuse to its Division I-record 10th national title as a freshman last year and made a career-high 19 saves yesterday.

"We had some chances to shoot the ball, great chances to shoot, and their goalie came up big," Urick said. "Some of them were great saves, and I think some of them were average shots. The bottom line is he's a pretty damn good goalie, and you've got to make a good shot to get it by him."

One of Georgetown's best opportunities came in a tight first half in which Syracuse (3-1) scored two of the three goals. With 5 minutes 32 seconds left in the second quarter, Ryan Shuler drew Galloway out from his net on a breakaway. He tried a shot low to the far side, but Galloway read it perfectly and came up with a kick save.

"I haven't had one of those since high school," Galloway said. "I've been waiting to get one of those. I just wanted to do something when our offense wasn't clicking either way, and hopefully that helped us."

Still, the Hoyas managed to tie the score at 5 with 45 seconds left in the third quarter on a goal by Todd Cochran, who had hit a post on the first shot of the game. Syracuse responded with the last three goals. Matt Abbott scored the go-ahead goal 16 seconds after Cochran's equalizer, and Stephen Keogh added his fourth goal and Abbott his second.

Aside from a four-goal third period, though, Georgetown's offense was stymied. Andrew Brancaccio was the Hoyas' only multiple-goal scorer with two.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Georgetown women, ranked seventh, fell 15-4 to No. 1 Northwestern, the four-time defending national champion. In other men's games, Grant Catalino scored four goals in a 9-7 win for No. 6 Maryland (4-1) at Towson (1-3), and Andy Warner's three goals helped No. 14 Navy (4-2, 1-1 Patriot League) to a 14-9 home win over Lafayette (2-2, 0-1).
