Officer Fatally Shoots Suspect
An off-duty police officer shot and killed a man after the man tried to rob him early yesterday, D.C. police said.
Police said Jelani Khalid Slay, 34, of Clinton was armed and wearing a mask when he approached the officer, who was in his personal vehicle in the 5300 block of B Street SE about 5 a.m. Sunday.
The officer got out of his car and exchanged gunfire with Slay, who fled on foot, police said.
Authorities found Slay nearby, and he was pronounced dead a short while later.
Police said Slay shot another robbery victim, whose injuries were not life-threatening.
Officials did not identify the officer or the wounded victim. The officer is an 18-year veteran of the force, currently assigned to the 4th District.
This incident is the second fatal D.C. police-involved shooting this year.
