A 61-year-old Northwest Washington woman who retired as librarian from an independent school in the District was fatally stabbed on Long Island early yesterday, authorities said.

Suffolk County police identified the woman as Nancy McKinley of Beekman Place NW. They said a Bellport, N.Y., homeowner had called them to say that an intruder had stabbed a friend. Police said McKinley, who had been stabbed "multiple times," died at a hospital. Her attacker had fled, police said.

Until about 10 years ago, McKinley worked as librarian at National Presbyterian School in Northwest, acquaintances said.

An in-law, reached last night by telephone, described McKinley as a "wonderful woman." She was "the most beautiful woman on earth," the relative said.

A recent news report said her husband had been ambassador to Haiti in the 1980s.
