Installing a Solar System
-- Solar heat is reliable and pollution-free, and it will lower gas and electricity bills. Your house is a good candidate if it faces south and your property has unshaded areas.
-- Solar power can provide electricity, water heating and space heating.
-- A professional installer can evaluate your roof as a location for panels. The system also can go on the ground.
-- The cost ranges from $8,000 to $40,000, depending on how much power the system produces.
-- Solar contractors are listed in the phone book or on the Internet, and utility companies also can recommend them.
-- Maryland and the District have grant programs to subsidize solar projects for homes and businesses. Virginia does not.
-- Consumers who install solar electric systems can receive a 30 percent federal tax credit for systems placed in service from Jan. 1, 2006, through Dec. 31, 2016. Many area governments also offer tax breaks.
