Who: Loudoun County vs. Turner Ashby
When: Saturday 7 p.m., VCU Siegel Center, Richmond
Records: Raiders 24-5; Knights 26-1
What to look for from Loudoun County: An up-tempo team that scores in bunches, Loudoun County is not afraid to shoot from any distance at any time. Three-point threat Brittany Batts (19.4 points per game) and junior guard Alissa Kain (16.3) have been hot in the state playoffs, but the Raiders can also get it done inside with junior Kendra Holmes, a standout forward averaging 12.9 points and 12.4 rebounds per game.
What to look for from Turner Ashby: The Knights have two legit scorers in senior Nikki Newman and junior Kirby Burkholder, who both surpassed 1,000 career points this season. The top-ranked AA team in the state all season, Turner Ashby has allowed more than 50 points in a game just twice this season and not more than 46 points since Jan. 5.
Intangibles: Turner Ashby defeated Loudoun County 69-57 on Dec. 3, and their only loss came to Spotswood on Feb. 13. The Raiders have gained a wealth of experience since that early-season defeat. Though they lost four times to Division 3 finalist Freedom, the only other team to beat them this season, the Raiders narrowed the gap from 24 points on Dec. 6 to four points on Feb. 21 and has outscored opponents, 89-27, in the first half of its two state tournament wins.
