Moral incoherence baffles all who value rationality, especially those of us who have tried to understand the logic of some of our politicians and religious leaders when they fail to persuasively manifest reasonableness.

Michael Gerson identified Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, nominated to run the Department of Health and Human Services, as President Obama's "messenger for moral incoherence" ["Sebelius's 'Choice,' " op-ed, March 11]. Why is Ms. Sebelius, a Democrat and a Catholic, being singled out? For example, we have leaders in the Catholic Church who have demonstrated moral incoherence when dealing with the sexual abuse issue, certainly a pro-life issue because lives were destroyed.

When Republicans controlled Congress and the White House, they launched no serious campaign to end abortion, the only pro-life issue that seems to be on the GOP agenda.

Both political parties and many of our religious leaders fail to practice what they preach -- an indication of more moral incoherence.

Michael Gerson's muddled arguments in "Sebelius's 'Choice' " would properly be called a rant were it not for his elegant prose. He seems to be in the tradition of antiabortion ideologues who care mightily for the life of the fetus but give no thought to the rights and dignity of women.
