How Maryland Inmates Can Shorten Their Prison Terms

In Maryland state prisons, inmates who behave or complete certain programs accumulate credits that can shorten their incarceration.

Inmates convicted of nonviolent crimes can receive up to 20 days of reduction credits a month from the following categories:

Good conduct (up to 10 days a month).

Education (up to five days a month).

Prison jobs, such as mopping floors (up to five days a month).

Special projects, such as substance-abuse treatment, anger management, literacy and learning trades (up to 10 days a month).

Inmates convicted of violent crimes or drug distribution can receive up to 15 days of reduction credits a month from the following categories:

Good conduct (up to five days a month).

Education (up to five days a month).

Prison jobs, such as mopping floors (up to five days a month).

Special projects, such as substance-abuse treatment, anger management, literacy and learning trades (up to 10 days a month).

Note: Some inmates convicted of violent crimes can receive up to 20 days of credits a month if they share their cells, but the practice was discontinued for many inmates in 2007. Not all inmates participate in the programs, which have limited availability. Credits can't be applied to inmates serving life without the possibility of parole.
