A friend and I want to visit San Pedro, Belize. Can you offer tips on getting there and a great place to stay? We want a nice, clean place with a gorgeous beach, close to town so we can eat dinners out.

San Pedro, on Belize's Ambergris Caye, is a great destination, but you don't really go there for the beaches. They're small and sort of incidental to the main activities on the island, which are (a) diving and snorkeling at the world-class coral reef and (b) drinking Belikin beers in breezy thatch-roofed bars. There's no international air service to San Pedro, so fly to Belize City, then transfer to a puddle-jumper for the 20-minute flight to the island or take a 75-minute boat ride. The Web site http://www.ambergriscaye.com has a good guide to lodging; choices within walking distance of town are Ramon's Village, Coconuts and Caribbean Villas. But it's easy to get around the island via water taxi, so consider more upscale places north of town, such as Captain Morgan's, Journey's End or Matachica.
