El Tiempo Latino, a weekly newspaper published in Spanish by Washington Post Media, has won the prize for outstanding weekly from the National Association of Hispanic Publications.

According to El Tiempo, it was the seventh time in its 18 years that it has been recognized as the nation's premier Hispanic weekly.

The newspaper, a Washington Post publication since 2004, won seven other prizes March 13 at the Hispanic publications group's 24th annual national conference in McAllen, Tex.

Of the seven, two were gold awards -- for outstanding entertainment article and for outstanding community photo.

Paula Andaló, the managing editor, was cited for the entertainment article award and photographer Mario Ramos for the community photo award.

In a statement, Alberto Avendaño, El Tiempo's associate publisher, said that as print media face challenges, "it is important to recognize the quality and credibility of Spanish-language publications in the United States."

He said the awards were accepted "in the name of the more than 100,000 readers that we serve every week."

The award winners were described as "the best of the best" by Clara Padilla, president of the National Association of Hispanic Publications.
