The 400-student Science, Mathematics and Computer Science Magnet at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring is one of the nation's top math-science programs, a perennial rival to the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (650 students), Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County (1,800 students) and Stuyvesant High School in New York (3,200 students).
Here is how Blair has fared in recent national competition:
USA Biology Olympiad
The premier high school biology competition. Rounds of testing and training yield a four-person team to represent the United States in international competition.
Blair's record: Produced one of four U.S. team members in 2008. The region's most recent previous representative came from Thomas Jefferson in 2004.
Intel Science Talent Search
Nation's most prestigious pre-college science contest, recognizing 40 top senior research projects annually.
Blair's record: 26 finalists since 1998, the most of any high school. Stuyvesant has had 18 finalists; Thomas Jefferson, 12.
Presidential Scholars Program
Recognizes more than 100 seniors annually for scholarship, artistry, leadership and service.
Blair's record: Five magnet scholars since 2000, the most of any Maryland school. (Blair's communication arts program produced a sixth.) Thomas Jefferson had nine in that time.
