PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY

Council May Consider 'Buy American' Proposal

A Prince George's County Council member is expected to introduce a resolution today that would place a "Buy American" provision on the county's spending of money from the federal economic stimulus package.

Council member Eric Olson (D-College Park) said that the resolution would not require that the county buy U.S. goods and services when it spends stimulus funds but that it would encourage the practice.

"I recognize that there are things that are only manufactured out of the country, but if we are looking at providing a kick to the U.S. economy through the stimulus funds, it makes sense that we spend it on U.S. goods," Olson said.

A similar resolution is being considered by the Montgomery County Council. Dale Tibbitts, chief of staff for council member Marc Elrich (D-At Large), said Elrich has circulated a draft resolution to gauge support among his colleagues.

Police Seek Clues in Death Of Newborn Found in Lake

Authorities yesterday continued to examine the body of a newborn baby found in a lake in Prince George's County, looking for clues that might point to a cause of death or lead investigators to the parents.

On Sunday, two men fishing on Lake Artemesia found the baby in a trash bag that was in the water, police said.

Sources close to the investigation said the baby, reportedly a girl, was found with placenta and an attached umbilical cord.

Authorities asked that anyone with information about a recently pregnant woman who lost her baby under suspicious circumstances call police.

Police also used the incident to publicize Maryland's safe haven law, which allows women to take children 10 days old or younger to hospitals or police stations without being arrested or prosecuted.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY

Crofton Teenager Is Charged With Sexually Assaulting Girl, 7

A Crofton teenager lured a 7-year-old girl away from a playground last week and sexually assaulted her, Anne Arundel County police said yesterday.

According to police, a babysitter left the girl unattended at a playground Friday afternoon. When the babysitter returned, the girl had disappeared.

The girl showed up at the babysitter's home a short time later and said a man she did not know had asked her for "assistance" inside his home. Inside the house, he sexually assaulted the girl, police said.

Police arrested David B. Raszewski, 17, of the 1700 block of Granite Court, and charged him with second-degree rape and other offenses.
