NCAA WOMEN'S ROUNDUP
Mich. State Eliminates Duke, Former Coach
MSU 63, Duke 49
Wednesday, March 25, 2009
Michigan State fans came to boo their former coach.
They left cheering for the Spartans.
Mia Johnson scored 17 points and Lauren Aitch had 15, lifting ninth-seeded Michigan State to a 63-49 win last night over top-seeded Duke and former coach Joanne P. McCallie in the second round of the NCAA tournament in East Lansing, Mich.
Duke didn't make a shot for the last 7 1/2 minutes as it was outscored 16-2, leading to students rushing the court to celebrate.
In more than a decade, the only top-seeded team to lose in the second round was Ohio State in a 2006 setback against eighth-seeded Boston College.
Michigan State (22-10) will face Iowa State on Saturday in the West Region semifinals.
Jasmine Thomas had 14 points for Duke (27-6), while leading scorer Chante Black was held to just four.
The Blue Devils, who scored at least 75 points in each of their past six games, were held to a season-low total and made just 27 percent of their shots.
-- IOWA STATE 71, BALL STATE 57: Nicky Wieben scored 18 points as the fourth-seeded Cyclones looked comfortable playing the villain, holding off upset-minded Ball State, 71-57, in Bowling Green, Ky., to advance to the region semifinals for the first time in eight years.
Kelsey Bolte added 16 points and seven rebounds as Iowa State (26-8) made sure it wouldn't become 12th-seeded Ball State's second victim in three days. The Cardinals (26-9) became the feel-good story of the tournament's opening weekend after shocking two-time defending champion Tennessee in the first round.
