Chat Plus: Travel Ideas for Istanbul

Sunday, March 29, 2009

During our online chat (most Mondays at 2 p.m.), you ask and we answer your travel questions -- mostly. Here's one we couldn't get to last week.

It looks like I'll be able to go to Istanbul this summer for a week. What side trip would you recommend? I usually love the coast, culture and history.

If you can spend a day or two outside the city, fly to Izmir and see the ruins at Ephesus. But for a half-day treat, take a cruise up the Bosphorus, the strait that separates Europe from Asia, lined with Ottoman palaces and crumbling old mansions. It's about a five-hour round trip to the northern town of Anadolu Kavagi, where you can hike up to the ruins of a castle and have lunch at one of the many fish restaurants. No need to take a private cruise; buy a ticket on a regular ferry (about $7 round trip) at the Eminonu dock near the Galata Bridge.
