As the mother of two African American boys in the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, I was outraged by Jay Mathews's column ["Saying 'When' on D.C. School Voucher Program"] on the Schools & Learning page in the March 23 Metro section.
My sons Anthony and Antone have attended Ambassador Baptist Church Christian School for the past four years. When they started, they had problems in math, speech and focusing -- but now they are doing wonderfully. Their grades have improved, and Anthony even helps the younger students with their math. I am able to be much more involved in their education, and I love volunteering at the school.
My granddaughter is 3 years old and full of potential. Mr. Mathews believes she shouldn't have the same opportunity because providing it might involve a hard political fight. I believe that all children in the District, not just the most privileged, deserve a chance to succeed in life and should have access to any school they would like to attend.
When I met D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty at my neighborhood association meeting, he complimented my boys and promised to do what he could to get the program continued. He seems like the type to fight for what is right, and there are thousands of District residents like me ready to help him.
