Orioles Send Wieters Out
Catcher Matt Wieters, 22, was assigned to Baltimore's minor league camp, but it probably won't be long before the team's prized prospect becomes a fixture in the Orioles' lineup.
"He's beyond his years. What a great kid. I mean, really and truly," Orioles Manager Dave Trembley said. "I told him there's only been one or two other guys in all my years that I can equate him with. They don't come around that often."
On the field in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Orioles right-hander Koji Uehara struck out two New York Mets and induced a ground ball during a nine-pitch first inning before a rain delay forced him out of the game. The Orioles won, 5-1. . . .
Chicago Cubs Manager Lou Piniella picked Kevin Gregg as his closer. Gregg beat out Carlos Marmol. . . . The Detroit Tigers placed left-handed pitcher Dontrelle Willis on the 15-day disabled list with an anxiety disorder and put oft-injured reliever Joel Zumaya on the list with a sore right shoulder. . . . New York Yankees Manager Joe Girardi announced that Brett Gardner beat out Melky Cabrera for the starting spot in center field.

Deadly Stampede
A stampede at a World Cup qualifying soccer match in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, killed at least 22 people and wounded 132, authorities said.
Fans at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny arena pushed against each other shortly before the game between Ivory Coast and Malawi, setting off a panic that led to the stampede, Interior Minister Desire Tagro said on state television. . . . Eduardo Lillingston and Bojan Stepanovic each scored second-half goals to lift Chivas USA to a 2-0 MLS victory over FC Dallas in Frisco, Tex.

Hoyas Win at Citi Field
The New York Mets' Citi Field opened its gates for a test run, as 22,397 fans ignored the wet and chilly weather to watch Georgetown use a four-run seventh inning to beat St. John's, 6-4, in a Big East baseball game. . . In a Women's NIT quarterfinal, Georgetown lost, 65-56, at Boston College. Karee Houlette led the Hoyas (20-14) with 15 points. . . . Jason Lawrence scored a power-play goal with 14.4 seconds left, and Boston University advanced to the Frozen Four for the first time in 12 years, beating New Hampshire, 2-1, in the Northeast Region final in Manchester, N.H. The Terriers will meet Vermont on April 9 at Verizon Center. Bemidji State secured its first trip to the Frozen Four with a 4-1 win over Cornell in the Midwest Region final in Grand Rapids, Mich. Matt Dalton made 25 saves to send the Beavers into a semifinal meeting with Miami of Ohio. . . . Lindsey Vonn captured the women's slalom title at the 2009 U.S. Alpine Championships in Girdwood, Alaska. Former Dartmouth College skier David Chodounsky won the men's slalom. . . . Top-ranked Serena Williams trailed much of the first set but rallied to beat Peng Shuai 7-5, 6-2 in the third round at the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla.
