ISRAEL

Palestinian Killed Protesting Demolition

Israeli police fatally shot a Palestinian motorist Tuesday as he tried to run down officers guarding the demolition of the home of a Palestinian man who killed three Israelis with a Caterpillar earthmover on a main thoroughfare in Jerusalem last July.

About 50 Palestinians threw stones at armored border police, who responded by firing tear gas at the crowd. The driver's body was laid out on the street under a plastic sheet with one of his hands sticking out near his white car, its windshield shattered by about 20 bullet holes.

A few hours before the shooting, an Israeli wrecking crew had begun demolishing the home of 30-year-old Hussam Edwyat in an Arab neighborhood of East Jerusalem, a punishment meant to deter violence.

Thaksin Supporters Assemble in Bangkok

Tens of thousands of protesters rallied in Bangkok on Wednesday in their biggest bid yet to topple Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, sparking fears of a violent new twist to Thailand's political crisis.

Security forces guarded key government locations as supporters of fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra massed here, a day after activists raised tensions by attacking Abhisit's car.

Abhisit has warned the protesters of strong action if there is any violence, but the government is under extra pressure to keep the peace ahead of a summit of Asian leaders due to start Friday in Pattaya, where Abhisit came under attack Tuesday.
