The chocolate pancakes were not a hit.

But the pumpkin, blueberry and buckwheat pancakes keep 'em coming back.

For 39 years on the first Saturday of most months, St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Kensington has hosted a pancake breakfast organized and prepared by the United Methodist Men.

From September through June, the church group provides the all-you can-eat spread. For $5, breakfast seekers may select any or all of the items on a menu that features scrambled eggs, sausage, applesauce, fresh fruit and pancakes -- including a special pancake of the month.

On Saturday, 168 people from the church and surrounding neighborhood turned out for the April breakfast. It is a meal that does more than put smiles on the faces of pancake lovers.

Breakfast proceeds, between $500 and $600 a month, are used to support church and community projects. The $550 raised this month will benefit the United Methodist Church's West River Conference Center in Anne Arundel County.

Other beneficiaries over the past year have included the church's education fund, which gives higher-education awards to high school seniors at St. Paul's, and the Children's Inn at the National Institutes of Health.

The next pancake breakfast is May 2, from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the church, 10401 Armory Ave.
