Effie P. Jackson Secretary

Effie P. Jackson, 79, executive secretary to the commanding officer at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda from 1968 to 1989, died April 1 at Washington Hospital Center of complications from heart surgery.

Effie Irene Pack was born in Patrick County, Va., and grew up in Mount Airy, N.C. She moved to the Washington region in the early 1950s and settled in Beltsville in 1964.

Her husband of 55 years, Carroll C. Jackson, died in 2005.

Survivors include three daughters, Deborah Dula of Myersville, Cynthia Reazin of Knoxville, Md., and Diane Jackson of Nashville; four sisters; three brothers; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Doreen S. Kuhl Docent

Doreen S. Kuhl, 83, who had been a docent at the National Museum of American History since 1985, died March 30 at Capital Hospice in Arlington of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Mrs. Kuhl also was a volunteer with the Fairfax County Public Library from 1985 to 1999 and with the Women's Committee for the National Symphony Orchestra.

Doreen Alice Leslie Stouffer was born in Fostoria, Ohio, and worked in the training and public relations department for Halle Brothers, a department store in Cleveland. From 1954 to 1964, she worked as the advertising and public relations director for Second Federal Savings and Loan in Cleveland.

Before moving to Alexandria in 1985, she lived in Las Vegas and was the public relations director for First Western Savings Bank.

Her husband of 55 years, Lawrence W. Kuhl, died in 2003.
