I will be in Madrid this spring and will have only half a day to explore. Could you suggest a favorite sight or activity? I would prefer to spend my time outside and would prefer to save the museums for another trip.

No. 1 choice: Rambling in the Retiro, the city's most popular park and gathering place for Madrile├▒os of all stripes (spots, plaids, you name it). On weekends it's packed with street musicians, jugglers, vendors, fortunetellers and more. Just watch out for pickpockets. For a quieter option, there's a lovely botanical garden adjacent to the Prado, with 30,000 types of plants. Another leafy venue: the Casa del Campo, the capital's largest park, with picnic grounds, a zoo, boating and horseback riding.
