Chat Plus: Exploring Madrid's Great Outdoors

Sunday, April 12, 2009

During our online chat (most Mondays at 2 p.m.), you ask and we answer your travel questions -- mostly. Here's one we couldn't get to last week.

I will be in Madrid this spring and will have only half a day to explore. Could you suggest a favorite sight or activity? I would prefer to spend my time outside and would prefer to save the museums for another trip.

No. 1 choice: Rambling in the Retiro, the city's most popular park and gathering place for MadrileƱos of all stripes (spots, plaids, you name it). On weekends it's packed with street musicians, jugglers, vendors, fortunetellers and more. Just watch out for pickpockets. For a quieter option, there's a lovely botanical garden adjacent to the Prado, with 30,000 types of plants. Another leafy venue: the Casa del Campo, the capital's largest park, with picnic grounds, a zoo, boating and horseback riding.
