Poppy Hill Tuscan Kitchen (1000 Charles St., 540-373-2035, http://www.ciaopoppyhill.com) was named one of the country's Top 10 farm-to-table restaurants by Bon Appetit and Gourmet magazines' Epicurious.com.
Sammy T's (801 Caroline St., 540-371-2008, http://www.sammyts.com) was recommended by our meat-eating Rising Sun Tavern guide (see below). Its menu of "light food and ale" has a selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes.
Carl's (2200 Princess Anne St., no phone or Web site) is a Fredericksburg institution. Open daily; closes in winter.
What to Do
Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park (120 Chatham Lane, 540-654-5532, http://www.nps.gov/frsp). This national park encompasses four battlefields -- Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House -- within a radius of 17 miles.
