An Ashburn man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, Loudoun County officials said today.

The suspect, David E. Cavalieri, 40, called 911 about 10 a.m. yesterday to report that he had stabbed himself at his condominium on Timber Ridge Terrace, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

When emergency responders arrived, they found an injured Cavalieri, and a search of the condo revealed a dead woman in the bedroom whose body was "obstructed," apparently in an attempt to hide it, Troxell said.

He said authorities obtained a search warrant and confirmed that the woman was Cavalieri's 37-year-old girlfriend, though the cause of death has not been released pending an autopsy. Her name is being withheld while her family is notified, Troxell said.

Cavalieri was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital and was treated and released yesterday. Late last night, he was charged with first-degree murder.

"He was cooperative with investigators," Troxell said.
