Del. Sue Kullen (D-Calvert) has been named president of the women's caucus of the General Assembly for 2009-10. Kullen has been a member of the Maryland House of Delegates since 2004 and is on the Health and Government Operations Committee.

The women's caucus has 59 members -- 11 senators and 48 delegates, or 31 percent of the General Assembly. In 1972, it became the first legislative women's caucus in the nation. Maryland ranks ninth in the country in terms of women in legislatures.

Calvert Cycling Event To Aid Area Food Banks

More than 300 bicyclists are expected to hit Southern Maryland roads Saturday for the first End Hunger in Calvert County ride.

Cyclists from the Washington area and as far away as Maine are expected to participate in the event, which starts at 8 a.m. at Chesapeake Church in Huntingtown. The goal is to raise $10,000 to stock food pantries in Calvert.

"The need is so great right now, it's impossible to keep the shelves full. As soon as food comes in, it goes right out," said the Rev. Robert P. Hahn, senior pastor of the church and chairman of End Hunger in Calvert County, an association of more than 30 Calvert business and community leaders.

Four trails will be available, based on levels of difficulty. For information and to register, go to http://www.endhungercalvert.org.

This year, Hoyer nominated 38 candidates from his 5th Congressional District for admission into one of four academies: the Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.; the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs; the Naval Academy in Annapolis; and the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.

Names of those accepted will be announced this spring.
