The Washington Nationals' bullpen imploded this weekend in a three-game sweep by the Florida Marlins:
Friday
Ninth inning: With a 2-1 lead, Joel Hanrahan gave up a one-out homer to Cody Ross.
How it ended: Saúl Rivera gave up three hits and a run in the 10th as the Marlins won, 3-2.
Saturday
Ninth inning: Pitching with a 6-3 lead, Hanrahan struck out the first batter, but pinch hitter Alfredo Amézaga singled to center, then took second on a wild pitch. Ross Gload singled, scoring Amézaga. Following another strikeout, Hanrahan gave up a homer to Jeremy Hermida.
How it ended: The Marlins scored three in the 11th to win, 9-6.
Yesterday
Ninth inning: Pitching with a 4-3 lead, Rivera walked Emilio Bonifacio, who scored on John Baker's double to tie the score. Rivera struck out Hanley Ramírez, intentionally walked Gload and struck out Dan Uggla. He then walked Hermida on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases. Ross then doubled to drive in three runs.
How it ended: Marlins won, 7-4.
The Aftermath
Out: Rivera was optioned to Class AAA Syracuse; relievers Wil Ledezma and Steven Shell were designated for assignment.
In: Relievers Jason Bergmann, Garrett Mock and Kip Wells were called up from Syracuse.
