Man Sentenced in Assault on Churchgoers
A Maryland man was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for assaulting his estranged wife, her pastor and other church members with a loaded shotgun last year.
According to prosecutors, on March 30, 2008, Randolph Smith Harris, known as Edward Harris, went to Hart Middle School in Southeast Washington, where his wife's church was holding services.
Police say Harris, 46, saw his wife sitting in a vehicle outside the school and approached, pointing the gun at her and ordering her to open the vehicle.
When she refused, police said, Harris approached the pastor, pointed the gun at his head and threatened to kill him if the woman did not comply. Harris struck the pastor in the head and pointed the gun at two other church members before fleeing, police said.
Harris was convicted of assault with intent to kill while armed, assault with a dangerous weapon and related firearm offenses.
