Pittsburgh-based SMaSh Technologies has raised a $1.35 million round, led by Mark Cuban, the billionaire who owns the Dallas Mavericks and is chairman of HDNet. Also participating in the round was a seed-stage investment group, Innovation Works of Pittsburgh, and Dr. Ihor Lys, who was named 2008 National Inventor of the Year by the Intellectual Property Owners Education Foundation.
The investment will be used to expand the company's product development and delivery of customer solutions. The company helps businesses launch text-based applications that includes: menu-based information navigation, multiple-touch interactions, reminders, "add to favorites" functionality, subscription to notifications, sharing of messages with friends/colleagues, lookups, scheduling, transactions, and more. Cuban calls it "essentially enabling cookies for mobile." Of course the benefit of using text messaging is that every phone has the capability. SMaSh said it is actively working with agencies, brands, and developers to come up with mobile applications that can be used by anyone. Release.
