Mother-of-three Lil Rounds and Chapel Hill BMOC Anoop Desai did not survive Disco Week on "American Idol."
More than 45 million votes were cast -- but not nearly enough for Lil and Anoop, who were sent home because last week, the judges used their one-and-only Judges' Save card to keep Matt Giraud in the competition, and this thing's gotta wrap up the week of May 18.
Judge Paula Abdul choreographed this week's Disco Group Lip Sync: It was a little disco, a little Michael Flatley, a whole lot of power walkin'. After it was over, host Ryan Seacrest brought Abdul up onstage so she could receive a huge opening-night bouquet of flowers.
Tuesday's performance night had come in at some semblance of on-time -- in marked contrast to some of this season's recent performance shows -- after producers cut pre-taped bits, as well as the usual Mentoring of Idolettes by former stars of that week's genre, whom you can generally expect to see perform the next night during the results show.
So viewers were completely unprepared for Wednesday's Disco Infirmary. Sexagenarians Freda Payne and Thelma Houston, in a too-sheer evening gown and a bright yellow nightie, respectively, sang their signature tunes, and jiggled but not in a good way. Imagine your grandmother dressed as a canary, singing
"Come on, Simon
Satisfy a need in me."
Ick. Ick. Ick.
Also taking the stage, Harry Wayne "KC" Casey, of KC and the Sunshine Band. He was slightly less mind-scarring.
Lil was eliminated early in the show with little suspense, the night after she donned a cat suit and discoed her way through "I'm Every Woman," and the judges told her they had no idea who she was.
Although Lil hardly ever hit a right note since the early stages of the competition, she had been a voter fave owing to her pluck and her three adorable little children. "It's been a heck of a fight, and we've been proud to have you on this show," Seacrest gushed after giving her the hook. The judges fawned over her -- even Simon Cowell had nice things to say, as if he were going to miss her family in the audience, screaming.
Anoop, on the other hand, messed with the genre by singing "Dim All the Lights" like a misbegotten Ralph Lauren model.
