Style Fashion & Beauty: Eco-Friendly Clothing Can Be Fashionble
"Eco-friendly" and "fashion-forward" haven't always been synonymous -- especially since previous Earth-conscious collections consisted of drab color palettes and silhouettes that were anything but chic. But the times, they are a-changin': Labels big and small are turning out covetable items in organic cotton and hemp, vegan leather and reclaimed metal. "The inspiration is coming from street looks, from girls on their blogs posting pictures of their outfits," says Summer Rayne Oakes, model/activist and author of eco-fashion guide "Style, Naturally."
And while creating an eco-friendly closet might require digging a little deeper into your bank account, Kathy Deane, president of the Tobe Report, a fashion merchandising consulting company, considers it a matter of quality over quantity. "The customer's looking for good value -- she's not just looking for something that's inexpensive. . . . She doesn't want to feel like she's just being a 'consumer'; she wants to be a smart consumer and a concerned consumer."
The best part: Green goodies aren't just reserved for yesterday's Earth Day fete. Here, two looks -- for the workday and the weekend -- that ensure your footprint is fashionable all season long.
