A man was struck by a vehicle and fatally injured early this morning on Route 29 in Burtonsville, Montgomery County police said, apparently after parking his pickup truck on a grassy embankment and getting out to walk.
The vehicle that hit the man did not stop and has not been found.
Police were called to the scene, just north of Spencerville Road (Route 198), at 4:41 a.m., said Kenneth O'Dell, a supervisor in the police communications center.
They found the man who had been hit and located his truck a short distance away, at first thinking the truck might have been involved in the accident. "We thought that was the striking vehicle, and it turns out it was his vehicle," O'Dell said.
Police were trying to determine the man's identity and were seeking information from witnesses that could help them issue a lookout for the vehicle that hit the man and left the scene.
It was not immediately clear why the man had gotten out of his pickup truck, or where he was headed on foot.
The northbound lanes of Route 29 were closed to traffic while police investigated the accident.
