Chat Plus: Places to Visit West of the Mississippi

Sunday, April 26, 2009

During our online chat (most Mondays at 2 p.m.), you ask and we answer your travel questions -- mostly. Here's one we couldn't get to last week.

I want to vacation in a U.S. city with lots of choices for culture, dining, activities, etc., and I can't think of anywhere I haven't been that I would like to go. What's west of the Mississippi, but not Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston, Austin or Seattle?

Let's hear it for second-tier cities. Some of my most memorable vacations have been in Tucson, a fabulous mix of Southwest culture, fiery cuisine and desert beauty; Fort Worth, home to real live cowboys, barbecue joints and (surprise!) world-class museums; and Denver, with a historic, hip downtown and Rocky roads. To that list, add the ever-appealing San Diego; Portland, Ore.; Minneapolis/St. Paul; Santa Fe; San Antonio. . . . The only problem you have, really, is too many choices.
