MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

Canseco Steps Into the Ring

Jose Canseco used his mammoth muscles to take pitchers deep and trade blows with Danny Bonaduce.

Now the former MVP will step onto the mat and try MMA.

In his latest attempt to cash in on his flagging post-baseball career, Canseco is set to make his mixed martial arts debut on May 26 in Japan. The former Oakland Athletics slugger and tell-all author is fighting South Korean Hong Man Choi on the Dream 9 card in Yokohama Arena.

Choi is a 7-foot-2, 330-pound super heavyweight and has a 1-2 record in MMA.

"I have no idea if I can do it," Canseco said yesterday. "It's a tough sport."

Canseco has written two books, starred in a pair of reality shows and had two celebrity boxing bouts since his 17-year baseball career ended.

SWINE FLU

Outbreak Alters Events

The swine flu outbreak has forced the cancellation or postponement of sporting events across the country, affecting everything from prep contests in Texas and Alabama to a college baseball road trip in Delaware.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association is pushing back its championship events until at least next week amid dozens of school shutdowns in the Huntsville area, where two probable cases of swine flu were reported. The state track and field championships were scheduled for this weekend.

Special Olympics Texas, meanwhile, canceled its spring games a day after all public high school athletic competitions in the state were put off until May 11.

Mexico has been at the center of the flu outbreak and its sports have been badly disrupted. Mexican pro soccer matches this weekend -- 176 in all -- will be played in empty stadiums and a pair of Copa Libertadores matches were moved to Colombia next week. The Copa Libertadores is Latin America's most prestigious club championship.
