Rachel Alexandra is heading to the Belmont. Just not the Belmont Stakes.
The 3-year-old filly, who crushed the field in Friday's Kentucky Oaks by a record 20 1/4 lengths, will probably make her next start in the $300,000 Acorn at Belmont on June 6, the same day as the final jewel of the Triple Crown.
"This gives her five weeks, which is what I like," trainer Hal Wiggins said yesterday.
She hardly looked tired the day after her amazing stretch run, dragging her groom around the barn during an early morning walk a few hours before the Kentucky Derby.
Even after watching his filly perhaps stamp herself as the top 3-year-old in the country -- boy or girl -- owner Dolphus Morrison said he has no plans to enter his star in either of the remaining Triple Crown races.
Phelps Attends Derby
Michael Phelps attended his first Kentucky Derby, bringing along his coach, Bob Bowman, who owns and races thoroughbreds in Maryland.
Phelps bet on the No. 8 horse, Stealin' Kisses, in the eighth race in honor of the record eight swimming gold medals he won at the Beijing Olympics. But the horse finished eighth.
Neumeier Is Released
NBC horse racing analyst Bob Neumeier was released from a hospital yesterday, a day after he collapsed during a Derby eve telecast from Churchill Downs. NBC provided no updated details on his condition.
Miner's Escape Wins Tesio
Nick Zito-trained Miner's Escape took a 4 1/2 -length victory yesterday in the $75,000 Federico Tesio Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
Sent to post at 7-2 odds as part of a Zito trained entry, Miner's Escape broke forwardly under Luis Garcia and tracked pacesetting Tone It Down to the top of the stretch in the 1 1/8 -mile test on the main track. When given the green light, the son of Mineshaft spurted past Tone It Down and crossed under the finish line in 1:51.23.
