Eleven minutes after De Rosario's equalizer, Adrian Serioux headed in Amado Guevara's free kick from seven yards to give Toronto (3-2-4) the lead.
After playing a total of 161 minutes in two games the previous seven days, Moreno, 35, began the evening on the bench. But with United trailing, Soehn inserted him for N'Silu. United's attack began to regain traction. Pontius, who had played all but 45 minutes in league play this season, was also held out of the starting lineup. He eventually entered in the 74th, and 12 minutes later, tied the score with a 15-yard one-timer off Rodney Wallace's cross.
De Rosario, however, answered by running at Namoff and unleashing a wicked 23-yard shot into the right side of the net.
"We were kind of still emotionally thinking about the goal we scored," Kocic said. "We were all over the place. The fans were too loud, and it was hard to communicate. Everyone was spread out, and [De Rosario] was in a great position to shoot."
United wasn't finished. Namoff drove the ball into the box, where it deflected off defender Marvell Wynne's arm and drew the call from referee Baldomero Toledo. Moreno lifted the penalty kick into the top left corner over Frei.
"From the beginning, we thought it was going to be easier and it got complicated," Moreno said. "We learned the hard way. It's something we didn't want to face, but at the same time, it's good it came so early in the season. We know what is out there and we can prepare for it."
United Notes: Negotiations will resume tomorrow concerning a potential friendly between United and Spanish power Real Madrid in August at FedEx Field, sources said. Real's second game on the preseason tour would likely be at Toronto. . . . United's Devon McTavish made his first start since the season opener and played 74 minutes.
