U-Md. Receives $100,000 For Veterans Services

The University of Maryland University College has received a $100,000 grant to enhance its outreach and services for veterans.

The grants were awarded by the American Council on Education and the Wal-Mart Foundation through its Success for Veterans program to 20 colleges and universities that have model programs for veterans and their family members. More than 250 colleges and universities applied for the grant, officials said.

The money will support efforts to create veteran-specific online orientation programs, expand on-campus veterans service centers, enhance prospective student outreach and strengthen other services for veterans.

Early Registration Is Open For Kindergarten Students

Prince George's County public schools are offering early registration for kindergarten in the fall.

Children must be 5 years old by Sept. 1 to register, according to state law, and only parents or court-appointed guardians may register a student.

Proof of residency and birth verification for each student are required at the time of registration, and the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene mandates that students complete a series of immunizations, a physical examination and lead screening before attending school.

For information, call 301-952-6000 or visit the school system's Web site, at http://www.pgcps.org.

2 Catholic School Teachers Win Golden Apple Awards

Two teachers in Prince George's were honored Thursday at the first Golden Apple Awards dinner for their excellence in teaching and their commitment to Catholic education.

Leigh Hampton, a second-grade teacher at St. Pius X Regional School in Bowie, and Margaret Walsh, a third-grade teacher at St. Mary of the Mills School in Laurel, were nominated by colleagues, parents and students. Each received a $5,000 prize, a golden apple, a pin and a certificate.

Hampton has taught at St. Pius X since 2001 and is the school's summer camp founder and director as well as high school youth minister for the church parish. Walsh has taught third grade at St. Mary of the Mills since 1985 and serves on the school's social concerns committee.

"She is a person of strong moral values who sets high standards for herself and serves as an outstanding example of living her Catholic faith for our students and fellow colleagues," Principal James Pavlacka said in recommending her for the award.
