BOSTON, May 18 -- A man was shot and wounded Monday afternoon outside an undergraduate dormitory at Harvard University, police said.

The man was shot outside Kirkland House, the university's public relations office said, adding that the shooting appeared to be an "isolated" incident.

Sgt. James DeFrancesco of the Harvard police said the victim was "taken to a nearby hospital . . . in stable condition."

There was no immediate information about the identity of the victim or of the shooter. DeFrancesco told the campus newspaper, the Crimson, that he did not know whether the victim attended the school.

The Crimson quoted a dental school student who attended to the victim as saying that he was found bleeding but conscious.
