Two D.C. police supervisors helped deliver a baby today outside a police station in Southeast Washington, officials said.

The drama took place about 8:25 a.m., when a man pulled up his car outside the 1st District substation, in the 500 block of E Street SE, jumped out, and frantically requested help. The man's wife was delivering their baby in the front passenger's seat, police said.

There was no time to wait. Capt. Jeff Brown and Lt. Daniel Ewell saw that the infant's head was visible, police said. They called for an ambulance, tried to calm the parents-to-be, and then helped deliver the child. The father was able to grasp the infant as she was being delivered, police said.

Police provided blankets and clothing for the newborn, and paramedics arrived to provide further assistance.

The parents asked to remain anonymous, police said. The baby has been named Elizabeth.
