Delays in complying with a new federal regulation kept three public pools in Montgomery County from opening as scheduled this weekend, officials said.

The main pool is closed at Bethesda Pool on Little Falls Parkway, according to manager Miklo Youroukov. The smaller lap pool, junior pool and tot pools are all open, Youroukov said.

At Germantown Outdoor Pool on Kings View Drive, the shallow pool is closed, while the main pool and tot pool remain open, according to the county. The leisure pool at the Wheaton/Glenmont Pool on Dalewood Drive is also closed, but all other pools at the facility are open.

A law passed last year requires all public pools to install anti-entrapment drain covers to prevent children from becoming stuck in the drain and drowning. The covers must be custom-made, Youroukov said, and shipping delays prevented the Montgomery pools from opening on time. He said all affected pools should be open by next weekend.
