SLOT MACHINE GAMBLING
New Bids Advised for Rocky Gap
The operator of a state-financed resort at Rocky Gap State Park yesterday recommended a new round of bidding next spring for a slot-machine facility at the Western Maryland location.
The site was the only one of five that emerged without a potential qualified operator during an initial round of bidding conducted by the state in February.
Yesterday, Robert C. Brennan, executive director of the Maryland Economic Development Corp., a state-backed entity that financed the Rocky Gap lodge, recommended a new round of bidding next year. That, he said, would give the legislature a chance to increase the percentage of proceeds kept by a company that operates the slots facility, perhaps enticing more bidders.
Brennan made his suggestion to a state panel that will award licenses to Maryland's five slots operators. The panel, which is seeking to award licenses at the other four locations by fall, took no action yesterday on the recommendation.
