Stafford senior left-hander Daniel King, unfazed by a lengthy rain delay before the game or another weather stoppage in the fifth inning, tossed a complete game in an 8-1 home win over Battlefield last night in the Virginia AAA Northwestern Region championship to lift the Indians to their first region title.
Stafford (17-6) will host Eastern Region runner-up Menchville in a state quarterfinal Tuesday. Battlefield will play at Eastern champion Frank W. Cox.
"He was throwing just as well after the rain delay as he was in the first inning," first-year Stafford coach Tommy Harrison said. "He's pretty resilient, and I guess because of the situation of it being a region final game, he wanted to finish it."
Stafford took a 5-1 lead, thanks in part to a two-run double by junior David Brooks, before the rain delay with two outs in the top of the fifth. Battlefield had two runners on base.
King, who carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning in a region quarterfinal win over George Washington-Danville on Monday, returned to record the final out in the fifth and set the Bobcats down in order in the sixth and seventh innings.
Stafford, upset in the Commonwealth District quarterfinals after winning a playback game over Mountain View to claim the regular-season district crown, will play in the state tournament for the first time.
"It seems like every night we're getting a contribution from somebody different, and that's what it takes," Harrison said. "Tonight it was the bottom of the order. The other night it was the middle of the order. We'll continue to keep pushing and try to make some history.
"The kids are playing with a lot of confidence. They're on untested waters, and you never know how they're going to react. Right now, they're taking the ball and running with it." . . .
Potomac Falls defeated host Orange County, 5-1, to win the Virginia AA Region II baseball championship. The Panthers (21-3) won their 13th straight game and will host a state tournament quarterfinal on Tuesday night against the runner-up from the Region I tournament.
The 10th-ranked Loudoun Valley softball team defeated Franklin County, 5-0, last night in a Virginia AAA Northwest Region semifinal game to secure a berth in next week's state tournament. The Vikings (22-4) will play at No. 1 Battlefield (23-1) today at 5 p.m. for the Northwest Region title.
