A tree trimmer inadvertently slashed one of Verizon's fiber cables near Welcome, Md., this afternoon, effectively cutting off telephone service outside of the local calling area to about 750 customers, a Verizon spokeswoman said.
The incident occurred at about 1 p.m. near the intersection of Shirley Boulevard and Route 6, just west of La Plata, said Sandra Arnette, a Verizon spokeswoman. She said about 750 customers were able to hear a dial tone but could not make or receive calls outside of their local calling area.
Arnette said the line was expected to be repaired by about 6 p.m.
The outage prompted the Charles County Sheriff's Office to deploy a command bus to the Nanjemoy Fire House at 4260 Port Tobacco Road, so that those needing to make emergency phone calls could do so, said Diane Richardson, a spokeswoman for the Charles County Sheriff's Office. She said Verizon officials were actively working to fix the problem.
